The Singapore News Bulletin on TV is great! It is good news mostly, except of course when it is about what happens in the rest of the world. If they mess up, there is nothing Singapore can do about it. Apart from the rare fire, another Dengue outbreak and the occasional murder, nothing bad happens here. So mostly the News opens with happy news: the results of one of the endless conferences and studies that are being held in Singapore, this visit of the Prime Minister to wherever, the visit of another country’s prime minister to Singapore, the opening of a new road, new ways to make people happier during their commute on public transport, sport achievements, etc.
Yesterday was no exception. You may have missed it, but it was International Toilet day. The reason the news opened with it was because Singapore initiated a UN resolution to call for greater attention to be paid to the global sanitation crisis. You may have missed the bit about the crisis too.
Anyway, the UN adopted the resolution and designated November 19 as the day to celebrate it. Yes, it is a celebration. Personally I don’t quite get it, but on the political front there is a lot I don’t get, so I’ll just skip the bit about my confusion.
A good way to celebrate anything is by revealing a sculpture. And that is exactly what happened yesterday in Singapore. The name of the sculpture is ‘Evolution of Man: Poo Pee Happy’ and this is what it looks like:
I have to admit that I like the news here, no doom and gloom, just about people who are trying to make Singapore even better.
On a more personal note, we did get our container and all our stuff arrived safely. I’ve been having head aches fitting everything in and dealing with hubby’s way of unpacking. We work in very different ways. I just start unpacking and try to fit it in. If it doesn’t fit anymore, something has got to go. I basically deal with it item-by-item. Hubby unpacks everything first, then assesses how much needs to be fitted, and then leaves it up to me to fit it in. This drove me crazy and there were several not so pretty outbursts. The neighbors swear they didn’t hear a thing, and although I find that hard to believe, it’s nice of them to say that.
But finally it’s coming together nicely. Apart from having to hang the odd painting we are more or less done and ready to explore our surroundings. So more on that next time!
